Surviving on Shoestrings: Cell Phone SOS – ICE My Phone

ICE MY PHONE SOS Episode 61

My guest, Laura Greenwald has launched the “ICE My Phone Campaign”.  She is on a campaign to help you!  Best of all it’s FREE, easy and FUN way to make sure someone can help on your behalf if you are not capable.  Better yet, it’s a way you can encourage your loved ones to set up their phones (for FREE) to help them in times of trouble.

SOS-ICESurviving on Shoestrings has created this graphic  to help make your ICE contacts easily noticed by any emergency personnel and/or Good Samaritan who may be helping you in a time of trouble.  Click here for your FREE Kit with instructions to download this image (or other images) that helps identify people in your contacts list as ICE contacts.  Laura & I hope you will use this image and the vital information she shares in the interview in order to get in touch with family and friends and be as safe as possible in an emergency.

The ICE My Phone Campaign is just one of many endeavors of my friend, Laura.  She and her mother have been on a painful journey that has brought about much fruit in order to help others hopefully avoid similar pain.  It’s a true testament to someone when they can turn a tragedy into a driving force to help others triumph.   Please be sure to visit her websites at Get Your Stuff Together  & The Back Up Plan  for more great, free resources and to find her books.

Surviving on Shoestrings: 20 Uses for Old Panty Hose

20 useful things to do with old nylon stockingsPanty hose, stockings or nylons, whatever you choose to call them – they just aren’t as popular now as they once were.  So maybe you have a surplus of them or you always ruin a pair before you get much use out of them.  They’re not just for legs if you think outside the panty hose box.

Today I’m on another weird rant of using what you have – even if you didn’t know you could use it that way!  Panty hose as a clothing item, once rendered useless for its original purpose either by obsolescence or damage, is actually quite a versatile fabric with a wide array of uses in life.  Panty hose can be used around the household, for beauty and health, in crafts and in the garden!

These legs were made for movin’!

Surviving on Shoestrings: Forming a Survival Group

SOS COLLAGE Charley HogwoodForming a Survival Group is the topic today on Surviving on Shoestrings.  Author Charley Hogwood, who wrote: “The Survival Group Handbook: How to Plan, Organize and Lead People For a Short or Long Term Survival Situation” joins me today.  Charley’s insight into the complexities when gathering ‘like-minded folks’ together to survive is both informative and enlightening.  He touches on a vital element we don’t often think of for survival – other people.

What does this have to do with making ends meet?  Think bartering, sharing skills, comrades on a difficult journey and more!

Surviving on Shoestrings: Helping Kids Prepare

Jake and Miller cover1 A fun book for helping kids prepare, Jake and Miller’s Big Adventure: A Prepper’s Book for Kids is not only encouraging to children but also helps remind parents and grandparents alike that prepping is actually an adventure!  Helping kids prepare, plan and imagine scenarios develops critical thinking skills that will come in handy as they grow.

Today I’m joined by the author, Bernie Carr to talk about her newest book. She also authored the national bestseller: The Prepper’s Pocket Guide: 101 Easy Things You Can Do to Ready Your Home for a Disaster and runs the blog AppartmentPrepper.com

Although this is our first conversation, I know I’ve met a kindred spirit when it comes to helping kids prepare and keeping it within a budget!  We have a great time talking about how to get kids involved and saving money while we prep!

Speaking of saving money, I and several other bloggers and hosts are also offering a Giveaway of this very book.

Surviving on Shoestrings: Top 10 Household Items to Never Buy New

Surviving on Shoestrings: Top 10 Household Items to Never Buy NewJune 9, 2014  My Top 10 Household Items to NEVER buy NEW  actually came from one of my weekly trips to a thrift store. I realized how easy it is to “go get a new_____” when something breaks or we think we need it.  I’ll admit to often having that as my first though.  But over the years, I come up with at least ten (10) things I will never buy new – ever again!

So as I walked through the thrift store once again looking at all of the household items and I started to compile a list in my mind of the top things that we have learned that it actually pays for us to buy them used rather than shop for a new replacement. I’d like to share my list of items with you in this show and tell you why they made my list!

Surviving on Shoestrings: Learn Frugally Sustainable Skills at Firefly Gathering

Firefly2013May 12, 2014 – Today it is my privilege to introduce Frank, Class Coordinator for the Firefly Gathering, one of the largest Earth Skills Events in the nation.  He and I both share a similar hope to introduce people to a more REAL (vs. virtual) life connected with the creation around us and to experience the joy of learning frugally sustainable skills for life. It is a lifestyle that not only lightens the financial burden but the intrinsic value to it is priceless.

Frank is currently establishing a staple food crop chestnut-based forest garden in Sodom-Laurel, NC, where he homesteads and experiments with permaculture farming. He graduated with honors from Shepherd College with a B.A. in Liberal Arts, after spending a year on the city council of Shepherdstown, WV, where he served on the Planning and Zoning Commission, Environmental Sustainability Committee, and Affordable Housing Committee. He is a member of the Northern Nut Growers Association (NNGA) and the North American Fruit Explorers (NAFEX).
